Why should we care about beverages in child care?
Early childhood is when children's taste preferences and habits form. Large numbers of California children regularly receive care in family day care homes or centers; therefore improving healthy beverage standards in child care is an important step in ensuring that they form healthy habits for life.
Nearly one in four children under the age of five is overweight or obese and tooth decay is the most common chronic disease among children. Overweight and obese children are at great risk of developing a number of chronic diseases later in life, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and stroke. In addition, overweight kids are more likely to grow up to be overweight or obese teens and adults.
Child care represents a great opportunity for obesity prevention. By acting early, we can help establish healthy habits for life.
